A different kind of freedom

There is a kind of freedom that comes when we stop running from ourselves. Not through fixing everything, or getting it all right. Just through facing what is.

Accountability and responsibility are often misunderstood. They can feel heavy, almost confronting, as though they require us to carry more. But in truth, they tend to do the opposite. They lighten the load.

We All Carry Something

Every one of us has moments we wish we could go back and change.

  • Something we said.

  • Something we didn’t say.

  • A decision we regret.

  • A version of ourselves we no longer recognise.

And yet, no matter how many times we replay it, we cannot go back. We question, analyse, revisit the what-ifs. And in doing so, we carry guilt and shame far longer than is necessary. It can feel like it lives in the body. Over time, that weight keeps us stuck. Not in the past itself, but in our relationship with it.

What if freedom came not from changing the past, but from changing how we hold it?There is something deeply liberating about pausing and saying:

Yes... that was me, I did that.

Not with judgment. Not with self-criticism. But with honesty.

The Power of Taking Ownership

Taking responsibility isn't about blame. It's about ownership. It might look like admitting the truth to yourself, or letting go of the need to justify. Being accountable, without using that accountability as another reason to be hard on yourself.

For many, this can feel uncomfortable at first. We are human, and we often protect ourselves through denial, blame, or excuses. Not because we are bad, but because we are trying to feel safe.

When we begin to meet ourselves with honesty instead of resistance, something loosens. Almost as if something we've been gripping tightly is finally allowed to rest.

Understanding Changes the View

When we begin to see our past through a wider lens, something important becomes clear:

We were never acting from full awareness. We were responding from what we knew at the time. From our conditioning. From our level of consciousness in that moment.

In many ways, we were living unconsciously (as most of us do) until awareness begins to grow. When we truly see this forgiveness becomes possible. Not forced or intellectual, but natural. For ourselves, and for others.

You Are Not Your Mistakes

You are not a bad person. You are human, navigating life with imperfect awareness, learning as you go. That is not a flaw. That is the condition we all share.

When we take responsibility, we are no longer bound to the past in the same way. We begin to move forward carrying wisdom rather than weight. As awareness grows, we become more present, more intentional. Our choices begin to change: through awareness, not through force.

A Different Way of Living

When we live more mindfully:

  • There is less fear

  • Less guilt

  • Less regret

In their place:

  • More calm

  • More energy

  • More clarity

  • More freedom

Life hasn’t become perfect, we are simply no longer resisting ourselves.

A Gentle Reflection

Is there something you are still carrying that might be ready to be acknowledged, rather than avoided? Not to judge. Not to fix. Just to gently say: “yes, I did that, I’m owning that maybe I was wrong, and I am allowed to move forward.”
