Are You Seeing Yourself... or a Reflection of a Reflection?

Charles Horton Cooley once wrote:

“I am not what I think I am.

I am not what you think I am.

I am what I think you think I am.”

Pause for a moment and let that settle.

So much of who we believe ourselves to be is shaped not by truth, but by perception - a perception of a perception.

We begin to imagine how we appear to others. We imagine their judgement of that appearance. And from there, we form a feeling about ourselves: pride, insecurity, confidence, or shame.

Without even realising it, our identity becomes quietly influenced by what we think others are thinking. If I believe you see me as strong, I feel strong. If I believe you see me as weak, I feel small. And yet... none of this may be true.

The Habit of Outsourcing Our Worth

It happens subtly. We walk into a room and feel slightly uneasy around certain people, without knowing why. In another space, with different people, we feel open, confident, at ease.

What changed? Often, nothing external. Only the story in our mind. A story built on assumption. And assumption can be powerful, not because it is accurate, but because it feels real.

Many of us have experienced the moment of realising we were completely wrong about what someone thought of us. And in that moment, something softens. A reminder appears: Perhaps what I am believing right now is not true.

Coming Back to Yourself

When we notice ourselves caught in these imagined perceptions, there is an opportunity: not to fix or force anything, but simply to become aware. To gently return to the present moment.

To step out of the story and into what is actually here.

One simple way to do this is through a brief pause... a reset of awareness.

The STOP Method

S - Stop: Pause, just for a moment. You don't have to fix anything yet.

T - Take a breath: A slow, conscious breath into the belly. This signals to your nervous system that you're safe.

O - Observe: Notice your thoughts, your feelings, your body, your impulses. Without adding meaning. Without judgement. Just observing.

P - Proceed: Softly, consciously, with a little more clarity. Perhaps with the understanding that what the mind is creating may not be true.

A Gentle Shift

Instead of looking outward for confirmation, we turn inward with compassion. Instead of believing every thought, we become aware of them. Instead of judging ourselves for feeling unsettled, we meet ourselves with kindness.

A small shift... but a powerful one. You might even find yourself softening in the moment, a small smile, a gentle exhale, a sense of coming home to yourself. You are more than the story in your mind. More than the reflection you imagine others see.

“When we’re compassionate to our wounded parts, they lose their grip on us.

We gain greater clarity and can make wiser choices.” - Kristen Neff

Invitation for Reflection

Where in your life might you be seeing yourself through the lens of assumption? And what changes when you return... simply to yourself?

Be gentle with yourself. You are learning to see yourself clearly, not through the eyes of others, but through the quiet truth of your own presence.
