Elevate Your State Week 2 - The Foundation Beneath All Skills

Have you ever noticed how, on some days, everything feels effortless; You think clearly, communicate with ease, and move through challenges gracefully, and on others, the simplest task feels like climbing a mountain?

What's the difference?

It's not your skills, knowledge, or even your circumstances. It's your state of being.

In a world that celebrates technical expertise, leadership, and communication, one foundational element often goes unnoticed: your inner state.

Unlike outward skills, which are learned behaviors or techniques, your state of being is your internal condition, your mental clarity, emotional balance, physical energy, and spiritual alignment. It forms the lens through which you experience life and determines how your skills are expressed.

You can have all the knowledge in the world, but if you're mentally foggy, emotionally reactive, or physically depleted, even your best abilities lose their impact. Your outer world is a reflection of your inner world.

Dr. Joe Dispenza describes your state of being as the ongoing interplay between your thoughts and emotions. This dynamic loop creates a biochemical signal that tells your body how to feel and your mind how to interpret reality.

When we live in stress or fear, our body releases hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, narrowing our focus and keeping us in survival mode. When we cultivate calm, gratitude, or joy, our body releases serotonin and dopamine: neurochemicals that expand creativity, resourcefulness, and emotional intelligence.

Your state determines whether you react from fear or respond from wisdom.

1. It Amplifies All Other Skills

Your state of being acts as the operating system for every action you take.

A brilliant communicator in a tense or distracted state will sound defensive or rushed. The same communicator, calm and centered, radiates empathy and connection.

2. It Optimizes Brain Function

Positive emotional states activate the prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain responsible for decision-making and creativity.

Chronic stress, on the other hand, shuts this center down, leaving you reactive and limited.

3. It Shapes How You Relate to Others

As Viktor Frankl wrote, "Between stimulus and response there is a space." That space, the moment of choice, is where your state of being lives.

A balanced state allows you to pause, reflect, and choose a response aligned with who you want to be.

4. It Determines Your Energy and Influence

A grounded, confident person creates calm around them. A scattered or anxious person unintentionally spreads that energy too.

The quality of your presence is your greatest influence.

Your state of being is not fixed. It's a living, breathing practice you can nurture daily.

Here are a few simple yet powerful ways to begin:

  • Breathe before you act. A single deep breath shifts your nervous system from reaction to regulation.

  • Move your body with intention. Physical movement clears emotional energy and restores vitality. (revisit the flow from last week)

  • Notice your self-talk. Every thought sends a chemical signal to your body. Choose words that heal, not harm.

  • Anchor gratitude. Write down one thing each day that reminds you of what's good and working. Gratitude rewires perception.

Reflection Prompt:

Take a quiet moment today and ask yourself:

"What is the state from which I'm living my life right now?"

"How does this state influence my relationships, decisions, and wellbeing?"

Awareness is the first step to transformation. When you master your internal state, you unlock the full power of your external abilities.

Your Practice This Week: Simple Mindfulness Meditation

You cannot think your way into a better state.

Meditation isn't about emptying your mind or achieving some mystical state of bliss. It's simply about coming home to yourself, to this breath, this moment, this body.

This week's practice: I'm guiding you through a simple 5-minute mindfulness meditation. No fancy techniques. No complicated instructions. Just you, your breath, and the present moment.

Find a comfortable seat. Close your eyes if that feels safe. And for just a few minutes, practice being instead of doing.

Your mind will wander, that's not a problem, that's the practice. Each time you notice your thoughts drifting, gently bring your awareness back to your breath.

That gentle return is where the transformation happens.

Try to practice this daily. Morning is ideal, but any time you can carve out is perfect. You're training your nervous system to remember calm.

When you elevate your state of being, you elevate your results, your relationships, and your entire life.

Elevate your state, elevate your life. Master yourself, master your life.
